About Sandalshore

Sandalshore began from a simple observation: many people in central Taiwan were seeking therapeutic bodywork that honored traditional approaches while remaining accessible and welcoming. We opened our practice in Nantou in early 2019, focusing on Thai massage techniques that have been refined over centuries.

The name Sandalshore reflects our location and philosophy. Sandalwood has long been valued in Asian cultures for its calming properties, while "shore" suggests a place of rest and transition. We aim to provide that sense of calm respite, where the body can release accumulated tension and find a more balanced state.

Thai massage, as we practice it, involves a combination of compression, stretching, and guided movement. Unlike oil-based massage styles, traditional Thai bodywork is performed on a mat with the client clothed in comfortable garments. This allows for a wider range of motion and deeper stretches. We've adapted these techniques to suit individual comfort levels and physical conditions, always checking in with clients throughout the session.

Our practitioners have trained both in Thailand and locally, learning from teachers who maintain direct lineages to traditional methods. We believe in continuous learning and regularly attend workshops to refine our understanding of body mechanics and therapeutic touch. This isn't about chasing trends — it's about deepening our capacity to support the people who come to us.

We chose Nantou partly because of its natural setting. The area's terraced landscapes and quieter pace create an environment conducive to relaxation. Our treatment space is designed to extend that sense of calm, with natural light, simple furnishings, and minimal distractions. We want the focus to remain on the body's experience during the session.

Over the years, we've worked with hikers recovering from mountain trails, office workers dealing with postural strain, athletes preparing for or recovering from events, and people simply seeking regular maintenance care. Each person brings different needs, and we adjust our approach accordingly. There's no single template — just a set of principles applied with attention to individual circumstances.

Our Values and Approach

Thai massage, in its traditional form, was developed by practitioners who understood the body as an integrated system. This perspective informs how we work. Rather than focusing solely on isolated areas of discomfort, we consider how different parts of the body relate to and influence each other. Tightness in the shoulders, for instance, might be connected to patterns in the hips or feet.

We value honesty in our interactions with clients. If someone comes in expecting a particular outcome that bodywork alone cannot provide, we'll say so. Thai massage can support relaxation, reduce muscular tension, and enhance flexibility. It can be part of a broader approach to maintaining physical well-being. What it cannot do is cure medical conditions or substitute for appropriate healthcare when needed.

Respect for the client's autonomy is central to our practice. Each person knows their own body better than any practitioner can. We work collaboratively, asking questions, listening to responses, and adjusting our techniques accordingly. If something doesn't feel right during a session, we want to know immediately so we can modify our approach.

We maintain a professional environment while also recognizing that bodywork involves a degree of vulnerability. Our practitioners are trained to maintain appropriate boundaries, communicate clearly, and create a space where clients feel safe and respected. This includes everything from draping protocols to the language we use when explaining techniques.

The practice space itself reflects these values. We keep things simple and uncluttered, using natural materials where possible and avoiding overly decorative elements that might distract from the therapeutic work. The focus remains on the session itself — the quality of touch, the effectiveness of the techniques, and the client's experience.
